Sunnylands distinguishes its thornless hybrid from the species commonly called Chilean mesquite, even though the names are sometimes used interchangeably in the nursery trade. A garden's common name alone should not be treated as proof of botanical parentage.

Flowers, pods and wildlife

Sunnylands describes late-spring and early-summer flowers that are fragrant and cream to yellow-green. They are followed by tough pods that remain closed at maturity. Mesquite flowers attract bees, and the trees provide structure and resources for birds and other wildlife.

In a desert garden

Its broad canopy can provide shade among lower-growing desert plants. Sunnylands describes the hybrid as requiring little water and notes that excessive watering can weaken it. Give a tree room for its mature spread, and have a qualified arborist guide structural pruning and site-specific care.

Explore more

Sunnylands Center & Gardens

Native honey mesquite

Silver torch cactus

Flora of the Coachella Valley

Source

Sunnylands: Thornless Hybrid Mesquite fact sheet.

Photographed and source checked October 14, 2026.
