    90 min

Make Stuft Pizza in Old Town your lunch stop. The meal is a suggestion, not a booking; check hours and allow extra time for a table.

Parking & arrival: Return to the Old Town area. Do not assume a shop’s reserved parking can be used for the entire outing.

When to go

Tuesday–Saturday works best. Start in Old Town around 9 a.m., reach the museum after 10 a.m., then have lunch. Shorten the outdoor walk on warm days.

Access & expectations

Mostly town sidewalks and museum spaces. Check individual venues for step-free access; the museum has exhibits on two floors.

Make it your own

On Sunday or Monday, skip the closed museum and spend longer in Old Town. For an indoor-focused visit, put the museum first on an open day.

Palm Springs City Hall, photographed by Mark Miller02

Palm Springs · 4½ hours at the stops

Art, architecture & a Palm Springs lunch

An exterior architecture stop, time with the museum collection, and an unhurried downtown finish. Keep the car hops short and the museum visit generous.

When to go

Friday–Sunday is the simplest fit for a morning museum visit. On Thursday, move the museum to the afternoon; it opens at noon. Check the calendar before setting out.

Access & expectations

City Hall is a working civic building; this stop is for the public exterior, not a promised interior tour. Contact the museum for accessibility arrangements.

Make it your own

If the museum is closed, make this an architecture-and-downtown outing. For more design, swap City Hall for the Architecture and Design Center after checking its hours and admission.

When to go

Wednesday–Saturday during Sunnylands’ open season is the best overlap with the library. Start Sunnylands in the late morning, before its 4 p.m. close. Avoid peak heat.

Access & expectations

This route visits Sunnylands Center & Gardens, not the ticketed historic estate. The library stop does not include an observatory tour or stargazing reservation.

Make it your own

When Sunnylands is closed for summer or a special event, skip it and extend the library visit. An observatory program can replace the final stop only after checking its calendar.

Faye Sarkowsky Sculpture Garden in Palm Desert, photographed by Mark Miller04

Palm Desert · 4½ hours at the stops

Sculpture, brunch & El Paseo

    Faye Sarkowsky Sculpture Garden

    60 min

Spend an hour with the sculpture and desert planting at Faye Sarkowsky Sculpture Garden. The museum lists daily access from sunrise to sunset.

Parking & arrival: The restaurant is at 73575 El Paseo, suite 2310. Use signed customer parking and check the route to the restaurant entrance.

    Place guide
  3. 3

    El Paseo

    120 min

Pick a short section of El Paseo for galleries, shops and public art. Two hours is a flexible allowance, not a recommendation to walk continuously in the sun.

Parking & arrival: Keep within posted parking limits or move your car closer to the shops you want to visit.

    Place guide
View the mapped route

When to go

Start with the garden in the cooler morning. Aim for brunch well before Wilma & Frieda’s published 2 p.m. closing time; shop and gallery hours vary.

Access & expectations

The sculpture garden is outdoors and free, not an indoor exhibition space. Paths, street crossings and individual businesses have different access conditions.

Make it your own

For heat or bad weather, omit the garden and replace the El Paseo walk with The Shops at Palm Desert. In the planner, remove those stops and add the indoor shopping option.

The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens, photographed for Desert Oasis Insider05

Palm Desert · 5 hours at the stops

The Living Desert, with room to play

Give the zoo the best part of the day, then leave one simple park stop for anyone who still has energy. No frantic checklist and no long cross-valley drive.

See stops, parking & alternatives
  1. 1

The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens

    240 min

Allow four hours for animals, gardens and breaks. Buy tickets through the zoo and check its daily schedule; do not assume paid encounters are included.

Parking & arrival: Use the zoo’s visitor parking at 47900 Portola Avenue. The official visitor page lists parking as free; follow staff directions.

    Place guide
  2. 2

    Palm Desert Civic Center Park

    60 min

If everyone wants another stop, drive to Civic Center Park for a short playground or path break. Bring a picnic or add a separate meal in the planner.

Parking & arrival: Use designated park parking, not adjacent reserved business spaces. Check local signs and park notices.

    Place guide
View the mapped route

When to go

Book admission and start at the zoo’s opening time. Hours change seasonally. This full route is for a comfortable, cool-weather day; shorten it if temperatures rise.

Access & expectations

Check the zoo’s accessibility guide for mobility rentals and services. The park stop is optional; neither this plan nor zoo admission reserves a special animal encounter.

Make it your own

If the zoo is enough for one day, delete the park stop. For an indoor finish, replace the park with The Shops at Palm Desert instead of adding more outdoor time.

Bombay Beach and the Salton Sea, photographed by Mark Miller06

Salton Sea · 3½ hours at the stops, plus driving

A quiet day along the Salton Sea

Follow the eastern side of the sea from the state park to Bombay Beach, with an optional third stop at the Sonny Bono refuge for exhibits and birdwatching.

See stops, parking & alternatives
  1. 1

Salton Sea State Recreation Area — Headquarters

    60 min

Begin at the Headquarters/visitor-center area for context and a short permitted walk. Check the official alert page; the visitor center currently lists 9 a.m.–4 p.m.

Parking & arrival: Use the paid designated day-use area at Headquarters. As checked October 2, 2026, Mecca Beach Campground and Bombay Beach Campground are closed; neither is a parking alternative.

    Place guide
  2. 2

    Bombay Beach

    90 min

Continue south to Bombay Beach. Explore only publicly accessible art and streets, keep noise low, and leave room for the return drive. This is a living neighborhood.

Parking & arrival: Use legal public parking where signs permit. Never block homes, driveways or access roads, and do not drive onto the beach. The town map pin is not a specific parking lot.

    Place guide
  3. 3

Sonny Bono Salton Sea National Wildlife Refuge — Visitor Center

    60 min

Optional third stop: continue to the Sonny Bono refuge Headquarters. Explore the visitor-center bird exhibits when open, or take a short birdwatching pause outdoors. The 60-minute allowance excludes the full Rock Hill Trail. Outdoor trails are generally open sunrise–sunset; check current access.

Parking & arrival: Use designated visitor parking at 906 West Sinclair Road, Calipatria, not the separate Unit 1 entrance. Refuge entry is free. Indoor exhibits are not guaranteed: check seasonal hours before making the extra drive.

    Place guide
View the mapped route

When to go

Choose a cool-weather day and check wind, air quality and park alerts. Start at the state park in the morning; leave time for the drive south and return. Confirm Sonny Bono exhibit hours at 760-348-5278: the center is usually open November–April, subject to staffing. Bring water, food and fuel; no restaurant stop is promised.

Access & expectations

This is not a swimming, beach-driving or off-road itinerary. Shoreline surfaces can be uneven. Stay in permitted public areas and respect the people who live in Bombay Beach.

Make it your own

For a shorter outing, remove the optional Sonny Bono stop in the planner: allow 2½ hours at the first two stops, plus driving. If its exhibits are closed, consider a brief outdoor birdwatching visit only when weather and access permit. Postpone in poor wind, dust or heat. Do not use the closed Mecca Beach or Bombay Beach campgrounds.

Check before you go

Times are suggested visit allowances, not reservations. Add travel, queues and meals unless stated. Recheck hours, weather, fees and access before leaving. Visitor information checked October 2, 2026. Conditions can change.
