Rancho Mirage Library & Observatory
Explore a public campus connecting books, cultural programs and community learning with astronomy and the night sky.
The Rancho Mirage Library & Observatory combines a modern public library, community gathering place, and astronomy center within one campus. Its collections and digital resources are supported by lectures, concerts, children’s programs, author appearances, educational events, and other activities designed for lifelong learning.
The library is also home to the Rancho Mirage Writers Festival, which brings nationally recognized authors, journalists, historians, and public figures to the Coachella Valley. Throughout the year, the building functions as one of Rancho Mirage’s principal cultural institutions rather than simply a place to borrow books.
Opened in 2018, the adjoining observatory contains a research-grade PlaneWave CDK700 telescope beneath a rotating dome. Public programs include observatory tours, guided stargazing, astronomy lectures, and special viewing events, while the library’s telescope-checkout program allows members to explore the night sky from home.
Together, the library and observatory create an unusual bridge between literature and science. Visitors can move from books, performances, and community discussions to direct observations of the Moon, planets, star clusters, nebulae, and distant galaxies—making the campus one of the Coachella Valley’s most distinctive public-learning destinations.
