Sunnylands

Sunnylands

Sunnylands is a historic midcentury modern estate and public garden in Rancho Mirage, California. Created as the winter residence of Ambassadors Walter and Leonore Annenberg, the 200-acre property became a private retreat for U.S. presidents, royalty, entertainers, and international leaders.

Completed in 1966, the estate’s 25,000-square-foot residence was designed by architect A. Quincy Jones, with distinctive interiors by William Haines and Ted Graber. Behind its recognizable pink roof, Sunnylands served as both an elegant desert home and an informal setting for diplomacy, earning comparisons to a West Coast Camp David. The estate continues to host high-level meetings intended to encourage international cooperation and meaningful dialogue.

Visitors can experience the public-facing Sunnylands Center & Gardens, where admission and parking are generally free. The center features rotating exhibitions, historical displays, a short film, a café, a gift shop, and gardens filled with native and arid-adapted plants. Access to the historic residence and private estate grounds is limited to ticketed guided tours, which often sell out in advance.

Sunnylands operates seasonally and may temporarily close for private diplomatic meetings or its annual summer hiatus. Visitors should confirm current hours, programs, tour availability, and property-access rules before arriving.
