The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens is preparing for Lion Ridge and the Lurie Special Events Center, the next major addition to its Palm Desert campus. This page tracks the project from approvals and construction preparation through future building work and opening.
Like our SilverRock development tracker, it separates plans from completed milestones. An entitlement extension is not a groundbreaking, and a projected completion season is not a guaranteed opening date.

What is planned?
Lion Ridge is intended to add African-lion habitat and conservation education. The adjacent Lurie Special Events Center, supported by Connie and Bob Lurie, is planned for zoo functions, private celebrations and corporate gatherings. The zoo’s donor materials describe dining capacity for up to 500 people and a 180-degree glass wall looking into the habitat.
The Palm Desert Post’s September 2 report describes three lion habitats, a 37,650-square-foot event center, a two-story administrative office and redesigned entrance and ticketing facilities. These are planned project components, not completed amenities.
The state environmental record identifies the work as an amendment to an earlier campus plan. It includes a new entry pavilion north of the existing Chase building, as well as the event center, lion habitat and associated facilities.
How this fits the wider expansion
The Living Desert identifies Crossroads of Conservation as a three-phase, $96 million improvement program. Its capital-campaign page separates the completed early phases from the current project:
Grundhofer Welcome Plaza and Appel Gift Shop were completed in November 2018.
The four-acre habitat was completed in November 2021.
The remaining phase combines new animal habitat with expanded event facilities.
That program total should not be presented as the construction price for the new lion exhibit. It also does not establish that every remaining fundraising requirement has been met.

Zoo announcement points to fall site work
A Living Desert leadership announcement published by the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums describes Lion Ridge site work as beginning in fall 2026. It also identifies completion of the project’s fundraising as an ongoing priority.

Planning approval extended
The Palm Desert Post reports a 4–0 Planning Commission vote extending approvals to September 3, 2027, without changing the project or its conditions. Its September 2 coverage said groundbreaking was expected within two weeks. Grading plans had been approved, with permit issuance dependent on remaining mitigation requirements.

Original expansion approved
CEQAnet records Palm Desert’s approval of CUP/PP/EA 23-0010. The notice, posted September 5, documents a Mitigated Negative Declaration, mitigation conditions and a monitoring program.
What to watch next
The next useful update is evidence that changes the project’s status—not simply the passage of another month.
Permits and site work: confirm issued construction permits and documented mobilization before changing the status to “under construction.”
Visible progress: establish dated photographs of the work area, then follow structures, habitat construction, visitor circulation and landscaping from comparable viewpoints.
Animal and visitor readiness: treat building completion, habitat commissioning, animal introductions and public access as separate milestones. A finished exterior alone does not establish an opening date.
Final opening information: record the zoo’s confirmed dates and any announced visitor changes when they become available. This tracker is a development record, not a substitute for current ticketing or access guidance.
