Thunderbird Country Club is one of Rancho Mirage’s foundational golf clubs, surrounded by established homes and dramatic mountain scenery. The broader Thunderbird area includes several distinct residential communities. This guide brings together Thunderbird Country Club, Thunderbird Heights and Thunderbird Cove, with original aerial photographs by Mark Miller.
Find your bearings
Highway 111 is the easiest landmark: the main golf course and clubhouse sit on the valley side of the highway, while Thunderbird Heights and Thunderbird Cove occupy the hillside side. The three names are related geographically and historically, but they do not describe one shared homeowners association.

One Thunderbird area, three different places
Thunderbird Country Club
The private country club is the golf and social center of the area. Its main clubhouse is at 70-737 Country Club Drive. Fairways, established residences and mountain views create the setting seen in the golf-course photographs.
The club also lists a separate Racquets Club at 70431 Highway 111. That helps explain why club amenities can appear on the hillside side of the highway: the location of a tennis court does not, by itself, identify the surrounding homes’ association.
Thunderbird Heights
Thunderbird Heights is the hillside residential neighborhood across Highway 111 from the main golf course. Its custom homes, varied rooflines and elevated positions give it a different character from the fairway setting below. The photographs show how homes and landscaping meet the mountain backdrop.
It is a distinct residential community with its own association. When comparing homes here, look at the individual property’s view, orientation, privacy, outdoor space, driveway and condition, along with the applicable association documents.
Thunderbird Cove
Thunderbird Cove is another distinct residential community on the hillside side of Highway 111, southeast of Thunderbird Heights in the orientation map. Its name should not be used interchangeably with either Thunderbird Heights or the country club.
A Cove address deserves its own review of the home, lot and association requirements. Being in the broader Thunderbird area does not establish which club privileges accompany a particular purchase.
From guest ranch to country club
The club traces its roots to Frank Bogert’s Thunderbird Ranch, a desert retreat offering horseback riding and chuckwagon meals in the 1940s. Johnny Dawson’s golf vision brought a new direction. On January 9, 1951, Dawson and course architect Lawrence Hughes hit the ceremonial opening shots at Thunderbird Ranch and Country Club.
Homes beside the fairways helped turn a desert getaway into a place to live. The club and surrounding neighborhoods became part of the development story of Rancho Mirage, with golf, architecture and mountain scenery shaping the area’s identity.
Golf, racquet sports and life at the club
Thunderbird’s current club offerings include golf, tennis, pickleball, dining, organized social events and wellness activities. Its programming spans lessons and clinics, social play, fitness classes and member gatherings.
Consider those offerings alongside how you would actually use them. Confirm membership availability, initiation charges, ongoing dues, guest policies and any additional activity charges directly with the club before treating access as part of a home’s value.
What homebuyers should separate
The property, its residential association and country-club membership are three separate parts of the decision. Confirm the exact subdivision and association for the address, then review current dues, maintenance responsibilities, insurance, architectural requirements and any assessments. Establish club eligibility and privileges separately.
For hillside homes, pay particular attention to drainage, retaining walls, access, shade and the condition of outdoor improvements. For homes near fairways or recreation facilities, consider privacy, activity and the home’s relationship to neighboring amenities. Evaluate the actual home and documents rather than relying on the broad Thunderbird name.

Frequently asked questions
Are Thunderbird Heights and Thunderbird Country Club the same HOA?
No. Thunderbird Heights is a distinct residential community with its own association. The private country club operates separately; verify the association and membership arrangements for the specific address.
Is Thunderbird Cove the same as Thunderbird Heights?
No. They are separate named residential communities in the broader Thunderbird area. The orientation map helps distinguish their locations.
Does owning a home here include country-club membership?
Do not assume that it does. Confirm any membership eligibility, transfer provisions, fees and privileges with the club and the property's transaction documents.
Where are the club’s tennis and pickleball facilities?
Thunderbird Country Club lists its Racquets Club at 70431 Highway 111, separately from the main clubhouse at 70-737 Country Club Drive.
About the photos, map and sources
All nine aerial photographs were captured by Mark Miller on October 13, 2026. They document the golf course, surrounding residential setting and mountain backdrop; individual photographs may include more than one neighborhood.
