For Paul David, one of the best compliments comes before the applause: someone in the audience starts singing along.

The Coachella Valley singer specializes in Frank Sinatra's music, performing at birthday celebrations, Rat Pack-themed parties, and intimate private gatherings. In our conversation, he described an evening built around familiar songs and a personal connection with the people in the room.

“It's a very intimate feeling,” Paul says. “I get to talk to everyone.”

For a host looking for live Sinatra music rather than simply a playlist, that interaction is an important part of what Paul offers.

  • Live vocals centered on Frank Sinatra, with selections associated with Michael Bublé and Nat King Cole.
  • Paul brings his own sound system and typically performs two one-hour sets with a break; a third hour can be arranged.
  • Available for private parties and celebrations throughout the Coachella Valley.

A performance that brings guests into the evening

Paul particularly enjoys smaller parties of around 40 or 50 people, where he can connect with individual guests. He describes smiles, people joining in with the words, and guests getting up to dance.

When someone sings along, he takes it as a sign that the music is reaching them. “That's a compliment in itself,” he says.

He has performed on stages, too, but says those settings can put more distance between him and the audience. At a small gathering, the conversation and response are right there. The guest count he describes is an example of a setting he enjoys, not a stated limit on bookings.

Sinatra at the center, with other familiar voices in the mix

Sinatra is the foundation of Paul's repertoire. He also sings selections associated with Michael Bublé and Nat King Cole, giving hosts a starting point for discussing the musical style of their celebration.

“I sing other things, but mostly Sinatra,” he explains.

Asked for a song that captures the response he enjoys, Paul immediately named New York, New York. “That gets everybody up dancing,” he says.

How a typical party unfolds

Paul generally gives guests time to arrive and settle in before he begins singing. At the parties he described, cocktails come first, with roughly half an hour before he greets the room, thanks everyone for coming, and starts the performance.

His usual format is an hour of singing, a break, and then another hour. He also has enough material for a third hour when a longer performance is arranged.

For planning purposes, discuss the total event window as well as the singing time. Two or three hours of music should not be confused with a continuous, no-break set; the start time, breaks, and finish should be agreed on for the particular booking.

He brings his own sound equipment

Paul supplies his own sound system. His preference is to set up earlier in the day, then return dressed for the performance, rather than arriving with equipment as the party begins.

Hosts should coordinate access to the space and the setup schedule with Paul, and describe whether the event will be indoors or outdoors. Bringing his own sound equipment is helpful, but the details of each venue still need to be discussed.
