A small but striking songbird found in the Coachella Valley and other desert regions of the Southwest. Habitat & Range
Vermilion Flycatchers prefer open areas near water, such as desert riparian zones, golf courses, agricultural fields, and even urban parks with scattered trees. They are found year-round in the southwestern U.S., Mexico, and Central and South America, though some northern populations migrate south for the winter.
Behavior & Diet
This species is an expert aerial hunter. It perches on low branches, fence posts, or shrubs and darts out to snatch flying insects midair. Its diet primarily consists of flies, beetles, grasshoppers, and other small arthropods, making it valuable for natural pest control.
Breeding & Nesting
During breeding season, males perform acrobatic display flights to attract mates, fluttering high above their territory while singing. Nests are small cup-shaped structures made of twigs, grass, and spider silk, typically placed in the fork of a tree branch. The female incubates two to four eggs while the male helps defend the nest.
