A large rodent known for its coat of sharp quills, which it uses as a defense mechanism against predators. These quills are actually modified hairs coated with thick plates of keratin that can detach when touched. Primarily nocturnal, the North American porcupine spends much of its time foraging alone for leaves, herbs, and tree bark, which make up its diet. Found across the northern and western United States, Canada, and into northern Mexico, this porcupine prefers forested habitats where it can climb trees to escape threats and find food. Despite their formidable defense, porcupines have a gentle and slow-moving nature.
