Dark-eyed Junco

Dark-eyed Juncos are small grayish-brown birds (5–6.5 inches long). They forage on the ground for seeds and insects, often forming winter flocks. Their trilled songs and sharp calls are common in forests, meadows, and suburban yards. These “snowbirds” migrate south from northern Canada and high-altitude areas for winter. Females build cup-like nests on or near the ground. They’re social, often mixing with other songbirds in non-breeding seasons.
