10 Upgrade Ideas for the Monterey Floor Plan in Trilogy La Quinta
Explore ten ways to personalize the Monterey in Trilogy La Quinta, from den doors and kitchen updates to storage, garage features and outdoor living—plus how casita homes differ.
The Monterey is a useful floor plan to study because a few focused changes can give the same basic layout a very different personality. At 60196 Desert Shadows Drive, the Monterey offers approximately 1,693 square feet, two bedrooms, two bathrooms and a flexible room near the entry. Other Monterey homes include a separate casita.
For this guide, I reviewed 24 recent MLS records representing 21 properties, including Monterey homes with casitas. Looking across those listings, the differences are not limited to paint colors and countertops. Owners have approached the entry room, kitchen, storage and outdoor spaces in different ways. These ten ideas show where that flexibility becomes interesting. They are selected for their usefulness and design potential, rather than ranked by resale value or how often they occur.

1. Give the front den a door
The room near the entry can work as an office, reading room or separate sitting area. Glazed French doors can keep a visual connection while allowing the room to close. A sliding barn door gives a different look and avoids a door swing, but needs usable wall space for its track. The choice starts with how you want the room to function. A den with doors is still a den unless it meets the requirements for a bedroom.

2. Rework the den’s look around its storage
Where a Monterey already has built-in shelving and a desk, there is an opportunity to refresh rather than start over. Compare the existing natural wood with a lighter wall color, then consider a cabinet-finish alternative. Keep the useful storage and let the room’s windows and proportions guide the furniture.

3. Refresh the island countertop and lighting
The island is a prominent part of the Monterey kitchen. A different countertop finish and well-proportioned pendant lights can change its appearance while keeping the existing shape and height. Compare lighter and warmer finishes against the cabinets and flooring, and consider how the lighting works from both the kitchen and living room. The reference photos show finish and lighting differences; they do not establish that an island was lowered or structurally modified.

Proposed lighter countertops, backsplash, glass pendants and matte-black cabinet hardware. The wood cabinet finish and island configuration are retained. The after image is an AI design concept, not completed work.
4. Coordinate the kitchen finishes and storage
Cabinet color, hardware, backsplash and lighting have more impact when considered together. Natural wood can be retained and complemented, or a painted finish can change the mood. Pullout shelves and organized drawers add another layer of usefulness that a wide kitchen photograph may not show.
5. Make the flooring feel connected
A more continuous floor treatment can make the entry, kitchen and living space read as a connected whole. Several examples use pale plank flooring. That does not mean every room needs the same material; the goal is an intentional transition that suits how the home is used.
6. Design the media wall around the room
The great-room entertainment area offers an opportunity for closed storage, shelving and a TV that fits the space. Some Monterey homes combine this with a fireplace. Others achieve a finished look with cabinetry alone. Start with seating, screen height and everyday storage before adding decorative features.

7. Refresh the bathroom within its footprint
A coordinated vanity counter, lighting and shower enclosure can change the primary bathroom considerably. Keeping the existing layout provides a useful starting point for the design conversation. More substantial changes to the shower, drainage or floor levels need a separate assessment.

8. Pay attention to the laundry and closet
Not every improvement needs to be dramatic. Laundry cabinets, a usable sink, hanging space and an organized closet affect daily life. First inventory what is already there. A room with good upper cabinets may need organization more than another bank of storage. In the closet, evaluate hanging heights, adjustable shelves and drawer organization against what you actually store; a thoughtful interior layout can improve daily use without changing the room’s footprint.

9. Make the garage work for everyday life
The featured Monterey has an existing four-foot garage extension, a dedicated mini-split, storage cabinets and interlocking floor tiles. The extra depth creates more flexibility for storage and a work area, depending on the vehicles parked inside. An existing extended garage is a feature to compare when shopping; it should not be confused with an easy expansion project for every Monterey.
A dedicated mini-split can make the garage more comfortable for sorting boxes, organizing equipment or working on projects during hot weather. It provides temperature control for this space independently of the house. The temperature it can maintain in peak summer depends on the unit’s capacity, insulation, air leakage, outdoor heat and how often the garage door opens. It is a useful comfort feature, not a guarantee that every garage will stay as cool as the house or suit every temperature-sensitive item. ENERGY STAR explains why proper sizing and installation matter.
The existing cabinets provide enclosed storage, while the interlocking tiles give the floor a finished appearance. The photographs below show these features as they are, without an AI renovation.
Water treatment: know which system you are looking at
Water preferences can become noticeable after a move—particularly taste, odor or mineral deposits on fixtures. These are different issues, and the equipment should match the concern. A conventional ion-exchange softener reduces hardness by replacing calcium and magnesium ions with sodium ions. It does not remove every dissolved substance. USGS describes the softening process.
The label on this home’s system identifies it as a HALO H2 Zero Ultimate, a whole-house filtration and conditioning system. HALO describes carbon filtration for reducing free chlorine and associated taste and odor, plus conditioning intended to address scale. The manufacturer’s manual states that minerals remain in the water. We therefore describe this equipment as filtration and conditioning, rather than a mineral-removing softener. Confirm the installed configuration and service history when evaluating the home. HALO product details · HALO manual.
Water treatment is a preference and equipment question, not evidence that the local supply is unsafe. Coachella Valley Water District reports that its drinking water meets state and federal standards; consult its water-quality information for local details.

10. Build the outdoor experience around shade
Covered dining, a comfortable lounge area and thoughtful landscaping can define the backyard. Across the examples, owners have used pergolas, awnings, fire features and water features in different combinations. The featured home already has a pergola, extended patio and putting green, providing a starting point for exploring furniture and lighting ideas.

And what about the Monterey with a casita?
A separate casita creates another set of possibilities for guests or a private work space. Several reviewed Monterey listings report about 1,965 square feet with three bedrooms and three bathrooms in total. Confirm the figures and configuration for each property. A later custom ADU is a different case from an original casita option, and should be evaluated separately.
For the room arrangement, see the Monterey floor-plan guide. Reported square footage varies by property and configuration; verify the figures for any home you are considering.
The best starting point is the Monterey you actually have: its existing finishes, options, lot and everyday strengths. Use the ideas to compare possibilities, then choose the few that would matter most to you.
