Trail notes
Know the trail.
Boo Hoff is the most demanding of the three main hikes from La Quinta Cove. The complete loop climbs into the Santa Rosa Mountains, opens views toward the Salton Sea, then returns by the Lake Cahuilla side. You can also hike partway up and retrace your steps for a shorter day.
What the route feels like
Start at Cove Oasis Trailhead at the top of La Quinta Cove. Follow the lower Cove Oasis route to the signed Boo Hoff junction. The sandy approach gives way to sustained, rocky climbing, with ocotillo, cholla and increasingly wide views. The complete loop descends toward Lake Cahuilla and uses Cove-to-Lake to return. The route is long enough that daylight, navigation and water need to be planned before starting.
For a shorter outing, turn around at an elevated viewpoint and return on the same trail. The full loop distance is approximate; GPS tracks, parking lots and route variants produce different totals and elevation estimates.
Before you go: Download an offline map, check the forecast and current trail status, tell someone your route and return time, and carry ample water. Avoid the long exposed route in summer heat or when storms could send water through the washes. Dogs are prohibited on the protected mountain trail.
Find the trailhead and study the map
Search for Cove Oasis Trailhead in your map app and follow Calle Tecate to the top of the Cove. The city identifies Boo Hoff and Bear Creek as trails accessed from this trailhead. Study the loop and its Cove-to-Lake return before leaving the parking area.

Mark’s original photographs show the mountain path, cholla and far-reaching views. Watch the Boo Hoff field video for a closer sense of the route.
The other two Cove hikes
Boo Hoff is one of three routes covered in our La Quinta Cove hiking guide. Cove-to-Lake is the more approachable lower route, while Bear Creek Oasis offers a strenuous out-and-back climb to a palm oasis. Compare all three before choosing your day.

How long is the full Boo Hoff loop?
Plan around 12.8 miles for the full loop. Distance varies with the lot and GPS route, so bring an offline map and allow an all-day window.
