From the Atlas
Grumman F8F Bearcat
The Bearcat was one of the last piston-engine fighters developed for the U.S. Navy. It entered fleet service in 1945, but World War II ended before the type reached combat. It later became well known in civilian air racing.
What to look for
Its compact airframe and large radial-engine cowling help distinguish it from longer-nosed inline-engine fighters. The design belongs to the brief transition between wartime propeller aircraft and the Navy’s jet age.
