The Indio Hills are a long, low system of uplifted ridges extending along the northeastern side of the Coachella Valley. Measuring approximately 20 miles long and reaching elevations of around 1,600 to 1,700 feet, the hills form a distinctive transition between the developed valley floor and the higher desert terrain to the northeast.
Unlike the nearby Little San Bernardino Mountains, the Indio Hills were formed primarily from layers of sediment that were folded, tilted and uplifted by movement along branches of the San Andreas Fault system. Continued erosion has carved these softer layers into sandy washes, narrow canyons, exposed ridges and the sculpted terrain known as the Indio Hills Badlands.
The hills also contain several natural palm oases where faults bring underground water close to the surface. These include groves near Pushawalla Canyon, Biskra Palms and the larger Coachella Valley Preserve area. Together, the exposed geology, fault-supported oases and eroded badlands make the Indio Hills one of the clearest places to observe how tectonic movement, water and erosion have shaped the Coachella Valley.
