Curtiss P-40 Warhawk
A rugged American fighter of World War II, the P-40 served in many theaters and became closely associated with the Flying Tigers in China. Its history also includes service with the 99th Fighter Squadron in North Africa.
What to look for
Look for the long engine cowling and the distinctive intake beneath the nose. Paint schemes and nose art can tell the story a restored aircraft is commemorating; the markings alone do not establish that airframe’s wartime service.
