From the Atlas
North American P-51 Mustang
The Mustang is closely associated with long-range fighter escort during World War II. Early versions used Allison engines; later Merlin-powered variants brought the high-altitude performance for which the aircraft became famous.
What to look for
Look at the engine cowling, canopy and radiator scoop beneath the fuselage. A restored Mustang’s paint scheme may honor a particular pilot or unit, so museum documentation is the best guide to the history of the individual airframe.
