Bougainvillea

A stunning ornamental beloved for its vibrant, papery bracts—often mistaken for flowers—in shades of magenta, orange, purple, red, pink, and white. Native to South America, it thrives in the Coachella Valley’s intense heat and arid climate, needing little water once established. Hardy and fast-growing, its spiny stems can serve as natural security hedges or cover fences, walls, trellises and even cascade over slopes. This low-maintenance plant prefers full sun and well-draining soil, with deep but infrequent watering to prevent root rot. Occasional pruning keeps it tidy, while a balanced fertilizer encourages prolific blooms year-round. Though non-native, Bougainvillea isn’t invasive in the valley and even offers pollinators a welcome haven. Planted thoughtfully, it adds dazzling color and practical benefits to desert landscapes.
