Two figures, one quiet connection
Among the palms and storefronts of downtown Palm Springs, two tall bronze figures pause together. Their bodies are simplified and stretched upward, their hands meeting between them. The city continues around them; the sculpture holds a quieter moment.
Resonance is a monumental sculpture by jd hansen, displayed in the public space outside the Kimpton Rowan Palm Springs Hotel. At approximately 10 feet tall, it turns an intimate gesture into something visible across the plaza.
What does Resonance mean?
ÆRENA Galleries & Gardens describes the work in terms of the shared energy between two people: the feeling of being in harmony with another person. In that interpretation, the space between the figures matters as much as the bronze itself.
Looking at the sculpture, you can follow that idea through the hands, the tilt of the heads and the opening between the bodies. Their connection is visible without a detailed facial expression. The figures remain distinct, while the gesture joins them.
That is a useful starting point for looking, rather than a requirement to feel one particular emotion. You might read affection, reassurance, companionship or stillness into the encounter. Spend a moment with the work before deciding what its title means to you.
What to look for
- The hands: follow the long arms toward the point where the figures connect.
- The space between them: move a few steps along the public walkway and notice how the opening changes.
- The bronze surface: the closer photograph reveals irregular textures and subtle shifts in color that disappear at a distance.
- The setting: palms echo the figures’ height, while the low rooflines make their upward reach more noticeable.
About jd hansen
Hansen works with human and animal forms to explore emotional relationships. HOHMANN, the gallery representing her locally, describes vulnerability, strength and nonverbal communication as recurring concerns in her work. Her elongated figures allow posture and gesture to carry much of that expression.
Her training includes a BFA from ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena, along with bronze-foundry and metalworking studies. Here, that material knowledge serves a very simple encounter: two people reaching toward one another.
From Florence to Palm Springs
Before arriving in Palm Springs, the monumental Resonance appeared at the Four Seasons Hotel Firenze in Florence. It came to downtown Palm Springs alongside Hansen’s Family Group, through a collaboration involving HOHMANN and Grit Development.
This is a temporary exhibition on loan from the artist. HOHMANN describes its duration as subject to availability and placement. There is no confirmed final viewing date in the current gallery notice. The photographs on this page document the installation on October 20, 2026.
Where to find it
Use Kimpton Rowan Palm Springs Hotel, 100 W. Tahquitz Canyon Way, Palm Springs, CA 92262 as your navigation reference. Look in the outdoor public space in front of the hotel, near the red PS I Love You sculpture. The first photograph shows the surrounding storefronts and palms to help you recognize the spot.
The work can be viewed from the public walkway. Keep the path clear, respect the landscaping and enjoy the sculpture without climbing or touching it. Because the installation is temporary, check the gallery’s current announcement before making a special trip.
Find Resonance on the DOI map. The marker identifies the Rowan area; use the photograph and location notes to find the sculpture.
Explore downtown Palm Springs to extend the visit, or browse Art & Artists for more of the valley’s creative stories.
